KNOWLEDGE (TACTICS)

Knowledge (tactics) is a new and custom skill which illustrates a character’s ability to assess a combat or potential-combat situation. It allows a character to develop battle plans, set ambushes, or coordinate party movements.

Some examples and difficulties are listed below:

DC……….EXAMPLE
10……….Quickly estimate a group number and determine their status (offensive, on guard, etc.)
15……….Analyze terrain and structures to deduce where to set an ambush or hold a line.
20……….Collaborate with several groups to coordinate a unified attack or defense.
25……….Orchestrate a massive siege on a fortification or rally a village to defend against one.
30……….Organize a major military campaign, including resources and manpower, which could potentially last months.

Knowledge: Tactics would be an appropriate class skill for:

  • Fighter
  • Paladin
  • Ranger
  • Cavalier
  • Gunslinger
  • Anti-Paladin
  • Samurai
  • Marksman
  • Psychic Warrior
  • Tactician

PROFESSION

I’ve never liked the way the Profession skill is written and handled in the official rules. It’s pointless. Here’s the official description:

You can earn half your Profession check result in gold pieces per week of dedicated work. You know how to use the tools of your trade, how to perform the profession’s daily tasks, how to supervise helpers, and how to handle common problems. You can also answer questions about your Profession. Basic questions are DC 10, while more complex questions are DC 15 or higher.

So even if you rolled a total of 30, you’d get a whopping 15 gp for an entire week’s work.

Here’s the house rule instead: You earn (Character Level + Skill Check) x 200 gold pieces per week of dedicated work. Example, you are 5th level and roll a Profession: Tailor check (total 15) you’d get 3,400 gp. That may seem like a lot, but you can also clear out an entire dungeon or two in that span of time, which would probably earn you much more.

Mind you this is DEDICATED work. So if you’re an armorsmith, you can’t just make armor every morning while fighting through the jungle. Or if a teacher or mercenary, while you may be doing your job while adventuring, your attention, time and resources are also being used up. Dedicated work means down-time only.
